Holding meetings during COVID

10/1/2020

Like many businesses monthly meetings are vital to a business, even during COVID. Meetings not only help bring together colleagues, they offer vital trainings. Holding virtual meetings has been a challenge during these times. Staff are getting fatigued from spending hours on video conference meetings. A lot of staff mention not feeling the connection to co-workers with not being able to see them in person.
I know I cannot be alone in saying that after a day spent on video meetings, I am exhausted. My eyes hurt; I am sore from being stuck at my desk all day to attend these meetings.

I wanted to share some things I have found helpful to keep me engaged during these meetings.
Avoid multitasking. It is important to keep your camera on. Not only does this help your co-workers remember who you are, but it helps you from multitasking since they will be able to see what you are doing. When you are multitasking, it is proven that you will not understand what is being said. This will help you stay focused on what your co-workers are saying.

Make sure to take breaks. I know that sounds too easy. It is incredible how easy it is to forget to take a 10- or 15-minute break. There are so many times I forget to walk away from my desk. This is a great time to get something to eat, get some water to drink. I love using this time to stretch, walk around a bit.
Change how you attend meetings. Sometimes I prefer to call in on my cell phone. It gives me the freedom to be able to walk around, sit outside, or stretch during the meetings. Granted I miss seeing everyone’s face when I call in to the meetings instead. Being able to walk around while on the call sure does help my eyes hurt less, my focus seems to improve.

I have felt the distance of being away from co-workers a lot. Most of us have not seen co-workers since March 2020. This starts to put a strain on the relationships. Some have said it makes it hard to work in a group or team when you are not able to sit down and collaborate in person. Make time to connect with those you are close with at least weekly. Email, phone call, or a quick video call to catch up.

I hope you found these tips helpful!
